MarkMate

MarkMate (www.markmate.ai) is an AI-powered essay feedback platform designed to deliver high-quality, rubric-aligned feedback at scale. Founded by a former Oxford and Cambridge academic, MarkMate was created to solve a structural problem in education: students need detailed feedback to improve, but teachers lack the time to provide it—particularly in large classes. Users upload an essay and its grading rubric. The system generates a structured front-page report with a grade estimate and detailed criterion-based feedback, and inserts in-line comments throughout the document. Educators can batch upload up to 30 essays for consistent review. The platform runs via Microsoft Azure, ensuring data privacy and that student work is not used for model training. In a university pilot, students who used MarkMate for practice essays improved their final grades by 3.5–5 percentage points, controlling for prior performance. MarkMate's focus on improving learning outcomes through scalable, evidence-based feedback has led to rapid early adoption in its home market of Australia and abroad.
