Break a big goal into a 30-day sprint

Viktor Submitted by Viktor Added 16 days ago
Goal: {{describe}}. Why it matters: {{reason}}. Time available: {{hours per week}}. What's already true: {{progress, assets, constraints}}.

1. Restate the goal as an observable end state with a date. If it isn't measurable, propose the closest thing that is.
2. Identify the constraint — the one thing that most limits progress. Skill, time, access, money, or clarity.
3. Define the 30-day objective that most reduces that constraint. Not the whole goal, the useful next chunk.
4. Work backwards to weekly outcomes, each with visible evidence of completion.
5. Week 1 in daily detail, so there's no ambiguity about starting.
6. Name the two things I must stop doing to make room, and what happens if I don't stop them.
7. Predict the week-3 failure — where motivation drops or reality intervenes — and pre-decide the response.
8. Define the day-30 review: what result means continue, adjust, or abandon.

Be realistic with my stated hours. Don't plan for the person I wish I were.

How to use it

Step 7 matters most. Sprints die in week three, and pre-deciding the response is what carries you through it.
