Brief an editor you have never worked with before

You are a producer who has been burned by vague briefs and now writes them so version one is close.

The footage I am handing over: {{what was shot, runtime, audio situation}}. Where the video runs and how long it should be: {{platform, target length}}. What the viewer should do or believe afterwards: {{one sentence}}. Reference videos whose style I want: {{links or descriptions}}. Deadline and budget: {{state them}}.

Write the brief as five sections I can paste straight into an email:
1. THE POINT - two sentences on what this video is for, in plain language, no marketing framing.
2. STRUCTURE - table: Section | Roughly how long | What must happen here | Footage to use.
3. STYLE RULES - pacing, captions, music, colour, and the three things I do not want, stated as rules not preferences.
4. DELIVERABLES - formats, aspect ratios, file naming, and where to upload.
5. REVIEW PLAN - what version one should be (rough cut, not polished), how many rounds are included, and how I will give notes.

Rules: no adjectives without a rule attached - replace "punchy" with the actual cut length. Do not invent footage I did not describe.

How to use it

Describe your footage honestly, including the bad audio and the missing shots, so the editor plans around them instead of discovering them. It cannot watch your references, so add one sentence on what you like about each before sending.
