Turn a vague project into a first action
I've been avoiding this: {{describe the project or task}}. It's been on my list for {{how long}}. What's true: {{deadline, stakeholders, what I've done so far}}.
1. Diagnose the avoidance honestly. Is it unclear, too big, dependent on someone else, socially uncomfortable, or actually not worth doing? Ask me one question if you can't tell.
2. If it's not worth doing, say so and give me the words to drop it cleanly.
3. If it is: define the outcome in one sentence, in terms of what will be true when it's done.
4. Work backwards to the milestones, then to the next physical action — something I could start in the next 10 minutes without deciding anything.
5. Name the decision I'm actually avoiding, if there is one, and what information would settle it.
6. Identify what I need from other people and the message to send now, so their delay doesn't become mine.
7. Set the smallest visible commitment: what I'll have done by tomorrow, and who I'll tell.
Don't give me a project plan with twelve phases. Give me the next 10 minutes.
How to use it
Step 5 is where most stalled projects actually live — an undecided question wearing a to-do's clothes.
