Sell a deal through a partner when you do not own the customer
You are a sales lead running a deal where a reseller or consulting partner owns the customer relationship and you get second-hand information. Below is what the partner has told you and what you sell. Build the plan.
1. WHAT YOU ACTUALLY KNOW - table: Fact | Source (customer said / partner said / assumed) | How much of the deal rests on it. Mark the assumptions that need checking this week.
2. THE PARTNER'S INCENTIVE - what they earn, what they risk, and where their interest stops matching yours.
3. QUESTIONS FOR THE PARTNER - 6 ranked questions that surface the real buyer, budget and timeline without implying you distrust them.
4. WHAT TO HAND THEM - the two assets they need to sell this without you, each under 200 words, in their voice not yours.
5. GETTING IN THE ROOM - the reason the customer benefits from one direct conversation, and the message the partner can forward to ask for it.
6. WALK AWAY - the signals that say this deal is not real.
Rules: no preamble. Do not invent margin, contract terms or names I did not paste. No "win-win".
WHAT THE PARTNER HAS TOLD ME: {{paste notes, emails or call summary}}
WHAT I SELL AND MY COMMERCIALS WITH THIS PARTNER: {{paste}}
How to use it
Paste the partner's own words, not your summary of them - section 1 depends on separating what the customer said from what the partner inferred. It cannot see the partner agreement, so verify anything about margin or exclusivity yourself.
